Hello everyone! I am a novice actor, well a painter really, but I've been asked to perform as a primary actor in two plays, in Spanish, even though it's a second language for me. I've done some modeling, and a short non-verbal television commercial, but I think that is a totally different kind of work. So far, I've been writing out 3x5 cards to learn my lines, taking it an act at a time. I have no idea what will happen when I'm on stage and see the audience looking at me, and I feel nervous about that!! Is it normal? I have found a stage where I can practice, but haven't gone yet.

Does anyone have any advice for someone like me who's just starting out?

So it sounds like you are self directed? If so, have a friend give you your cues and watch you in your rehearsals. Let the words get into your body and take it moment to moment as you tell the story in the text. Very impressive to do second language work right off the bat. The audience is a cushion of response. You will become sensitive to them but they do not dictate your actions, your scene partner gives and takes for the action to move forward.
Best of luck!
Thank you for the helpful advice. I am working with a director, and she's pounding me on my pronunciation, but is supportive and helpful in her criticism. Those who have seen a rehearsal have said that the interaction between me and my scene partner (we're playing Eve and Adam) is natural, and that's good, but I will work more with her to solidify our relationship instead of worrying about the audience. The second play will be harder because my scene is going to be solo. I guess the confounding thing is that my lines are Spanish expressions, so it's kind of tough to feel them coming from inside as a foreigner - I may need to do some improvising. On the bright side though, I can use pauses and my accent to compensate for my language shortcomings. Again, thank you for your help!
