Thierry Jaspart

Hi Thierry, We're big fans of your work and look forward to learning more about you. We know you live in Liège Belgium. Tell us a little bit about your city... (and are the waffles really as good as they say they are?)

Hehe yes, the waffles are really good here! Well, Liège is a small town where people are quite friendly... A very festive city! Many people are interested in the arts here. The problem is that it rains too often!

In what artistic medium(s) do you work?

Most of the time: computer graphics, drawings with pencils, engraving and collage of paper cut!

Does where you live influence your art? And if so, how?

Yes, just because we see lots of surreal scenes here in the streets! But I discovered most artists I like through the Internet and the magazines.

You mention street art as one of your mediums. Can you elaborate on that?

I love sticker art... It's a passion I have for two years now. I intend soon to make stencil art...

At what age did you start your artistic life? What would you consider your first big success as a working artist?

I draw since I was a kid. My best success is to see that my work is appreciated.

Is your family artistic?

Not at all. They are very nice, but they are not artists.

You've done some work for album covers. Have you ever dabbled in music yourself?

I played drums a few years ago, but I quickly stopped. That's all. I don't think I'm a good musician, so I try as much as possible to work with people who make music, because it's one of my biggest passions.

Birds seem to be a common theme in much of your work? Why birds?

Because when I don't know what to draw, I draw birds! It's sort of my backup plan! It also symbolizes freedom...

What artists do you admire?

There are many artists I admire... Shepard Fairey, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele ...

Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?

Somewhere I'll feel good at this moment.

If you couldn't be an artist, what else would you like to be?

Maybe a musician, if I had talent in music.

What would be the worst job you could imagine yourself in?

Soldier.

What do you do for fun?

I spend a lot of time on the Internet, I listen to music, I party with my friends...

Your work implies you have a good sense of humor. Know any good jokes about Americans (we won't take it personally ;))?

"How do you call "someone intelligent" in the USA? ... A tourist."

Do you have a motto or creed that you live by?

Honesty and derision.

What's a typical day like for you?

I get up late (but do not repeat it ;-)), I turn on my computer, I check my e-mail box, I put on some music and I start working. The evening, I generally go out with friends...

Any advice for the starving artists out there?

Show your work as often as possible, try to accept the most offers and be yourself.

Some short ones
city or country? City.
Sunrise or sunset? Mmmh... Sunset.
Healthy breakfast or coffee and cigarettes? Healthy breakfast.
Rules... to be followed or broken? Broken!
Pub or club? First the pub, then the club!
Life of the party or lone ranger? Life of the party.
Favorite season? Summer.
Favorite city? Berlin.
Last great movie you saw? This makes a long time I haven't watched a "great movie"...
Anything you wish we asked you but didn't? "What do you want to do tonight?" "The same thing we do every night — try to take over the world!"

thank you thierry. we wish you continued success.
