That your work is often whimsical, playful and enchanting doesn't detract from the seriousness of your art and skill. And it is so encouraging to hear of an artist able to survive financially as an artist!

I'd be grateful for some help/advice. I regularly use enamelled wires (or rather dyed polyurethane wires) in my sculptures, in addition to copper and steel. Last year I created several large steel and wire insect sculptures for permanent siting…

In the works...
Most of my sculptures are created out of steel, copper and wire, often using reclaimed materials. I like the concept of reusing things - giving them a rebirth - and the playfulness of creating forms from given shapes. Scrapyards and beaches are wonderful places in which to scavenge! I moved into steel and wire because of their capacity to produce linear structures and I particularly enjoy the way these materials rust or patinate as they age.

I am currently exploring different possibilities with wire, such as layering, texture and transparency. Certain objects fascinate me - strange pods, gnarled wood, roots, nests, cocoons… inspiring me to create my own primeval, bulbous forms pregnant with life and stretched, elongated structures which seem to be growing.

My series of cocoon, pod and nest-related sculptures are the result of my fascination with the process of nest-building and endless variations on these structures; the magic and mystery of cocoons and their relations - all of which nurture life forms within. Created out of various moulded, layered and woven wires - some reclaimed - the light effects on them and cast by them are important to their impact.

Going full time as an Artist

I recently quit my part-time art teaching post on the strength of a great sculpture commission (and the fact that I've wanted to get more stuck into my art for ages!) and suddenly a whole host of new art opportunities have come my way... so much so that I don't know if I can meet all the imminent deadlines in time! (Doesn't help being distracted by blogging on art sites!)

Anyway, the point is, despite various friends' cautious responses to my big step, it was just the right thing at… Continue
